June 11, 1920 - September 18, 2016
Bill Hardin, age 96, of Knoxville, Iowa, passed away Sunday afternoon, September 18, 2016 at the Westridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Knoxville. A visitation for Bill will be held from 12:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Friday, September 23, 2016 at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville. Bill’s family will be greeting friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday evening at the funeral home. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2016, at the First Presbyterian Church of Knoxville, with Pastor Ramona Wink officiating. He was born June 11, 1920 in Marion County, Iowa, the son of William and Martha (Leuty) Hardin. Bill graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1938 and attended Central College until joining the US Army in 1941. He served as an officer in the Army Air Corps for the duration of WWII and remained in the US Army Reserve until his retirement as a Major in 1965. Upon discharge from Active Duty in 1945, Bill attended the University of Iowa Law School, graduating in 1948. On July 21, 1943, at Marfa Army Air Base in Texas, Bill and Angeline (Angie) Damhof were joined in marriage. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage, until Angie’s death in 2012, and were blessed with four children: Bill Jr, Dave, Mary and Kathy. Bill practiced law in Knoxville from 1948 until his retirement in 2014, including two terms as Marion County Attorney in the early 1950s. He also served as a Veterans Administration Mental Health Referee and as an Iowa Inheritance Tax Appraiser. The hallmark of Bill’s life was service to others. He was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Knoxville, where he served repeatedly as an elder and moderator of the session. He was a lifelong Democrat and championed causes that served the disadvantaged in his community. Bill played a key leadership role in Knoxville Boy Scouts, and was a longstanding member of the Knoxville Library Board. Bill and Angie were fixtures in the development of the Marion County Historical Society. But Bill’s most lasting contribution to the community was the lives he touched and helped to make whole through legal services and advice, often dispensed without expectation of payment. Bill is survived by his children: Bill Hardin, Jr and wife Jan of Clive, Iowa; Dave Hardin and wife Deborah of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and Mary Hardin Young of Sacramento, California; and by nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Wilma Hoekstra, of Pella and a brother-in-law, Rex Shoop, of Des Moines. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, wife Angie, daughter Kathy Jo Hardin, and sister Ruth Hardin Shoop. The Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville is assisting Bill’s family with arrangements.
