Walter Eugene Lahart, age 91, of rural Georgetown died Tuesday November 13, 2007 in the Emergency Room at the Monroe County Hospital in Albia, Iowa. Walter was born on the family farm on October 4, 1916 in rural Georgetown, Iowa, to James William and Gertrude (Judge) Lahart. Walter graduated from Georgetown High School, class of 1934. He began farming after high school and served in the US Navy during WWII, as a flag man on a merchant ship. Walter married Lucille O?Brien on January 12, 1943 at St. Mary?s Catholic Church in Weller. To this union nine children were born. Walter continued to farm and in addition he also worked at John Deere in Waterloo, Chamberlian in Albia, and was a substitute school bus driver. Walter was very active member of St. Patrick?s Catholic Church in Georgetown. He was a council member and a trustee. Walter was also a member of the American Legion, Howard Cessna Post #136 of Albia, the Knights of Columbus, St. Mary?s council #4167, and the Monroe County Saddle Club. Walter was also a former leader of the Monroe County 4H. Walter is survived by his wife, Lucille Lahart of Georgetown; his children, Paul Lahart of Albia, Sue Wenke of Donnellson, Diane Fugate and Rick Smith of Eddyville, Connie Carter and husband Carl of Albia, Julie Chilton and Robert Griffin of Omaha, NE, and Linda Harwood and husband Jim of Omaha, NE; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great grandchildren. Walter is also survived by one sister, Mary Scieszinski of Albia. Walter is preceded in death by his parents, James and Gertrude Lahart; three sons, Stephen Lahart, Tony Lahart, and Gary Lahart; one son in law, Robert Wenke; one grandson, Dusty Fugate; and one great grandson, Zachary Beary. Walter is also preceded by three brothers, John Lahart, James Lahart, and Ed Lahart; and one sister, Ellen Flattery. Funeral services will be held at 10:30A.M., Saturday, November 17, 2007, at St. Patrick?s Catholic Church in Georgetown with Rev. Robert Lathrop officiating. Burial will follow services at St. Patrick?s Cemetery in Georgetown. Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M., Friday, November 16th, at the Winfield Funeral Home in Albia. Walter?s family will be present throughout the day and evening. At 7:00 P.M., a rosary will be led by the Knights of Columbus. A memorial has been established to St. Patrick?s Catholic Church in Georgetown.
