Mary Virginia Peak age 85, of Knoxville, passed away Monday, December 8, 2014, at her home in Knoxville. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, December 13, 2014 at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville. A private family burial will be held on Monday, at Graceland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:00 A.M., until service time Saturday at the Winfield Funeral Home. A reception will follow services at Mary’s home on Attica Road. Mary was born May 5, 1929, in St. Charles, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Mattie (Lehman) Scrivner. Mary was raised in St. Charles and she graduated from St. Charles High School, Class of 1946. After high school Mary attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in des Moines, graduating in 1951. On January 14, 1954 in Winterset, Iowa, Mary and Dr. Frank Allen Peak were united in marriage. Mary and Frank shared 59 years of marriage and blessed with five children: Lisa, Peter, Marty, Carmen and Meredith. Frank passed away on November 8, 2013. Mary worked as a nurse in Des Moines and later at the Collin’s Hospital in Knoxville when Mary and Dr. Peak moved to Knoxville. As their family grew Mary stayed at home and raised their family. Mary was an active community volunteer and member of local book club and various bible study groups. For many years Mary was very active with the Candy Stripes at the Knoxville Hospital. Mary is survived by her sons, Peter Peak of Bradenton, Fl, Frank “Marty” Peak of St. Charles; and her daughter Meredith (Todd) van Benthuysen of Azle, TX; and three grandsons, Peter Peak, Ryk van Benthuysen and Talon van Benthuysen. Mary is also survived by two sisters, Lois Burt of Cedar Rapids and May Ewart of Phoenix, AZ; and one brother Paul Scrivner of St. Charles. She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mattie Scrivner; her husband Dr. Frank Peak; two daughters, Marie Lisa Peak and Carmen Dana Peak; one sister Ruth Scrivner; and six brothers, Ivan, Grant, Guy, Gene, Charley and Joe Scrivner. A memorial in Mary’s memory has been established to the Marion County Helping Hands or to the Marion County Humane Society. Condolences may be sent to www.winfieldfh.com.
