Mary Adeline (Halligan) Lukavsky, age 90, of Newton, Iowa, passed away Monday morning, October 19, 2015, at her home in Newton. Visitation for Mary will begin at 3:00 P.M. on Friday, October 23, 2015 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church of Knoxville. A Christian wake service will be held on Friday at 4:00 P.M., with much of Mary’s family present from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, October 24, 2015 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, with Pastor Jacob Greiner officiating. Following a small luncheon provided at St. Anthony’s Church, the internment will be held at Our Lady of Good Council Cemetery in Moorland, Iowa. Mary was born on January 31, 1925, in Moorland, Iowa. She was the ninth and last child of Christopher Simon and Mary Adeline “Addie” (Byrne) Halligan. Mary attended and graduated from Sacred Heart High School of Fort Dodge, Iowa. She was a cheerleader while in high school. After high school she went to the business college in Fort Dodge for a short time before working at the Fort Dodge Telephone Company as a telephone operator. While working at the telephone company Mary met Urban Lukavsky. Mary and Urban soon were inseparable, and on August 2, 1948 at the Sacred Heart Church of Fort Dodge Mary and Urban were united in marriage. Mary and Luke were blessed with 67 years of marriage and had 13 children, 9 girls and 4 boys: Joan Kathleen, Christopher Michael, Thomas Joseph, Nancy Anne, Mary Jane, Timothy Lee, James Paul, Terese Yvonne, Patricia Jean, Julie Louise, Paula Suzanne, Caroline Michelle and Kathleen Adeline. Mary was a homemaker and raised her family of 13 children. She took a strong role in the education of her children and was active in the PTA. Mary’s love for music and her heart felt piano playing and singing with her children, inspired the formation of the Lukavsky Family Singers. Mary is survived by her two sons, Dr. Timothy (Catalina) Lukavsky and Dr. James (Angela) Lukavsky; seven daughters, Joan Lukavsky, Mary Jane Nydegger, Terese (Brad) Wiese, Patricia (Cris) Schwanebeck, Julie Lukavsky, Paula (Steve) Wilson, Caroline (Russell) Meade; son-in-law, Bob Dodds; 32 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 67 years Urban Lukavsky; two sons, Christopher and Thomas Lukavsky; two daughters, Nancy Dodds and Kathleen Lukavsky; and 8 siblings.
