Gerald DeWayne Stanley, age 81, of Moravia, died Wednesday evening March 18, 2009, at the Monroe Care Center in Albia, Iowa. DeWayne was born on March 10, 1928, in South English, Iowa to Dayton and Alice May (Snodgrass) Stanley. He attended Indonopolis High School until he joined the U.S. Air Force. DeWayne served in the Air Force from 1946 to 1949 in the 239th Medical Detachment. During his service he came home for his mother?s funeral, and proposed to Madeline Leola Phillips. They were married on July 27, 1947. They were blessed with 61 years of marriage and five children. After DeWayne?s military service he was a straight truck driver and helped farm. Within a few years he began to farm on his own. In 1957 he began to milk cows. He dairy farmed until 1969. In 1969 with his son, Jerry, he co-owned Stanley?s Standard Gas Station in Moravia. After retiring in 1995, he enjoyed camping and fishing with family. DeWayne is survived by his wife, Madeline Stanley of Moravia; four children, Ron Stanley of Burlington, Jerry Stanley of Albia, Connie Shipman of Centerville, and Alice Bennink of Osceola; 11 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren. DeWayne was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Janet Summers; one grandson, Wesley Worth Graham; three brothers, Harold, Lester, and Glenn Stanley; and one sister, Lorene Fry. A memorial has been established to the family, the Church of the Nazarene or to Hospice of Monroe County.
