Ettie Edna Sowienski, age 91, of Knoxville passed away Tuesday afternoon at her granddaughter’s home in Nevada, Iowa. A celebration of Ettie’s life will be held at 2:00 P.M., on Friday, December 16, 2016, at the Winfield Funeral Home in Knoxville. Ettie’s family will be greeting friends from 1:00 P.M. until service time. Ettie was born on November 14, 1925 in Willow Lake, South Dakota, the daughter of Daniel Bowinkle and Ida (Gronewald) Siebrands. Ettie was raised in Willow Lake and graduated from Willow Lake High School. At the age of 17 Ettie went to and graduated from Nurses Training in Huron, South Dakota. After graduation from nurses training Ettie moved to New York City and was a nurse cadet. While working in New York she met Stanley Henry Sowienski from Jersey City. They soon began dating and on April 14, 1947 Ettie and Stan were united in marriage. They were blessed with 55 years of marriage and four children. Stan died in February of 1992. Ettie was a nurse and a homemaker raising their family. She worked as a nurse for 48 years with the V.A. Hospitals, retiring in 1990. After her retirement Ettie was active in her retired nurses group. After she retired Ettie traveled with her sisters for many years. She also became very active and was a member of the Celebrate Community Church. Ettie was especially active with the Neighbor’s Helping Neighbors and oversaw the Celebrate Benevolence until her retirement in 2015 at the age of 90. Ettie is survived by three sons, Stanley (Karen) Sowienski, David (Suzie) Sowienski, and Richard (RolaJean) Sowienski, five grandchildren, Kara (Doug) Cook, Talon Sowienski, Laura (Ryan) Melton, Daniel (Stephanie) Sowienski, and Emily DiDonato, six great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, her nieces and nephews, brother-in-law, Jerry Bennett, and numerous friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Ida Siebrands, her husband, Stanley Sowienski, a son, Daniel Sowienski, her three sisters Luella Cooper, Ann Bennett, and Darlene Dykstra, two brother-in-law’s, Clint Dykstra and Rex Cooper, a daughter-in-law, Janet Sowienski, and a grandson, Aaron Sowienski. A memorial has been established in Ettie’s memory to the Celebrate Community Church in Knoxville, Iowa. The Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville is assisting Ettie’s family with services.
