Darryl Lee Six, age 75, of Knoxville, Iowa, passed away Sunday, October 4, 2015, at the Pella Hospice Comfort House. Darryl passed peacefully surrounded by his family after his long 5 1/2 year fight with cancer. Visitation will begin at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville. Darryl’s family will be present at the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., Wednesday evening. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, October 8, 2015 at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville, with Pastor Brent Hanna officiating. A private family burial will be held at a later date at Graceland Cemetery of Knoxville. He was born on January 2, 1940 in Iowa City, Iowa, to Edward Pearl and Llelvyn Bernice (Thomas) Six. Darryl was raised in Melcher and attended Melcher High School. On November 19, 1966, in St. Paul, Minnesota Darryl and Kathryn Elaine Huston were united in marriage. They have shared 48 years of marriage together and were blessed with four children: Alan, Allison, Susan, and Ryan. Darryl later attended and graduated from Northeast Missouri State College, graduating with a BSE Degree of education in December of 1972. He later also received his Master’s of Special Education from the University of South Dakota. Darryl began his teaching career in Maquoketa as a Director of Maquoketa Activities Center. He also taught in Carroll, Emmetsburg and Onawa. In 1983 the Six family moved to Knoxville and Darryl began teaching with the Knoxville High School. He taught at Knoxville until retiring in 2002. After retiring Darryl worked as an associate in the middle school for 5 years, retiring again in 2010. Darryl enjoyed special time with his family, his grandkids extracurricular activities, concerts, and sporting events. Darryl also liked bird watching from his home. He collected marbles, and was a Hawkeye and Minnesota Viking fan. Darryl is survived by his wife of 48 years Kathryn Six of Knoxville; his children, Alan (Diana) Six of Altoona, Allison (Jeff) Matthias of Knoxville, Susan (Dom) Lothi of Iowa City, and Ryan Six of Knoxville; 8 grandchildren, Jennifer Six, Heather Six, Tim Six, Chris Brown, Paige Brown, C.J. Matthias, Gabe Matthias, Addison Matthias; and one great-grandchild Liam Matthias. Darryl is also survived by his two sisters, Sheryl Dickey of Des Moines and Rhonda Ritt of Cottage Grove, MN; brother-in-law, Frank Voyek; sister-in-law, Janet Nelson; his aunt Beverly Hewitt; two uncles, Dick Thomas and Gary Thomas; and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents Edward Six and Llelvyn Six. A memorial in Darryl’s memory can be made to the family with a designation at a later date.
