Beryle Dean “Buck” Bacus, age 89 of Knoxville, Iowa, passed away Sunday morning, March 12, 2017, at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella. Visitation for Buck will be held from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville. Buck’s family will be present from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Wednesday evening. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, March 16, 2017 at the Winfield Funeral Home, with Pastor Brent Hanna officiating. Following services burial will be held at Ruckman Cemetery, north of Knoxville. Buck was born on June 14, 1927. He was the fifth child of Charles Wesley and Josephine M. (Glasgow Bacus. Buck married Betty Marjorie Cecil on March 15, 1952. The couple moved around in the early years of their marriage before making their home in Knoxville. Buck was employed by the Knoxville Community School District, retiring in 1992. Buck and Betty had two boys and two girls: Gary Dean, Donna Dianne, Kathleen Cecile, and David Mark. Buck was a jack-of-all-trades and a hard worker. Early in his life he worked construction jobs, at service stations and car repair shops, drove trucks, and owned and operated a sideline excavation business. Throughout his community, Buck was best known for his sense of humor, teasing wit, and imaginative practical jokes. His most treasured gifts to his friends and family were the fun and laughter he shared with them over the course of his life. Buck was a resident of West Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, of Knoxville, at the time of his death and continued to charm staff there with his easy-going nature. Buck was a big fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Minnesota Vikings, and Tootsie Pops. An avid sportsman, Buck enjoyed trapshooting, hunting, and fishing. Any time outdoors was a highlight in Buck’s day and he enjoyed spending time with his family in outdoor activities. Buck was also a highly-skilled horseman and passed on this knowledge and love for horses to his family. Church was a large part of Buck’s life and he attended the First Christian Church in Knoxville with wife, Betty, for many years. Buck was preceded in death by his wife betty. Buck is survived by two sons, Gary (Jeanie) Bacus and Mark (Angela) Bacus; two daughters, Donna Bacus and Kathleen Bacus; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Buck is also survived by his sisters Betty Cooper and Marilyn DeZwarte; one brother Bill Bacus; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial has been established in Buck’s memory to HCI Care Services of Knoxville. The Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville is assisting Buck’s family with services.
