Alfred John Swanson, age 88, of Northbrook, Illinois former resident of Monroe County, Iowa died February 1, 2007 in Highland Park Hospital in Highland Park, Illinois. He was born in Monroe County near the coal mining settlement of Buxton on February 10, 1918 to John Linus and Hilma (Isaacson) Swanson. Mr. Swanson attended schools in Monroe County and was a veteran of the World War II having served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in Europe and was wounded in action. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart. Due to his war injuries, he lived most of his post war years in veterans? hospitals and veteran homes in Illinois. For the past several years, he was a resident of the Lake Cook Health Care Facility in Northbrook, Illinois. Alfred is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, David Swanson; and one sister Elna Scala. Graveside Cremation Memorial Services will be held Saturday, March 10, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. in the Service Chapel Cemetery north of Albia, Iowa. Rev. Brad Gray will officiate the service. Military Rites will be conducted by the Howard Cessna Post # 136 American Legion of Albia at the gravesite. No visitation is planned.
