Lyle George Williams, beloved by so many was born June 9, 1933 in Bridgewater, Iowa. He was the son of Wildo Williams and Velma (Sickels) Williams. He spent the first few years of his childhood in Bridgewater, but at age ten was diagnosed with a brain tumor. It was removed at University Hospital in Iowa City. The tumor had crushed the optic nerve leaving him without sight. He was over a year recovering and learning to walk again. The family eventually moved to Vinton, Iowa where Lyle attended the Iowa Braille and Sightseeing School, graduating in 1953. Lyle earned his Bachelors in Sociology at Drake University and his Masters in Social Work from the University of Iowa. In 1961, Lyle married Aldeane Cleveringa. She passed away in 1989. Lyle worked in Arkansas, Washington and Michigan before getting back to Iowa and becoming a Social Worker at the V.A. Hospital in Knoxville, in 1980. He truly cared about the men on his ward. He retired in 1994. On October 5, 1990, a new family was formed when Lyle married Linda (Kline) Kappelmann and became step-dad to Lisa (Brad) Thomas and Kevin Kappelmann. Music was always important to Lyle. He was a member of a band in Vinton, sang at many weddings and funerals, played the Saxophone for residents at West Ridge Nursing Home, attended Jazz Festival each year and often traveled to Branson. He was a huge fan of the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye Football, but his greatest joy was his home and family, especially his four grandchildren. Lyle was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents, his brother; Donald, and niece; Donna Lee. Those left to cherish the many memories of him and his love are his wife of 25 years; Lin, step-daughter; Lisa (Brad) Thomas, stepson; Kevin (Belen) Kappelmann, grandchildren; Kaylin Butterfield, Benjamin Thomas, Kiara and Kaleb Kappelmann, his brother; Richard Williams, sisters-in-law; Phyllis Williams, Darlene Kline, Betty McRoberts, and Emma Poffenbarger, brother-in-law; Jerry (Sharon) Kline and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Services are entrusted to the Winfield Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa or the First United Methodist Church Music Chimes Fund.
